Maison Kuentz-Bas

France

In a world that sometimes seems dominated by Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, the vivid wines of Alsace stand out in the crowd. Alsace is unique amongst the French regions as it produces Germanic wines in a French style. The tone is set by the climatic and soil conditions similar to those found in the neighbouring German regions. The similarities to the German wines end with the use of the same varietals and the often German sounding names. Typically, the are strong flavoured and characteristically higher in alcohol.

We first met the well established and reputable family-owned Maison Kuentz-Bas 35 years ago, at that time operated by the cousins Christian Bas and Jacques Weber. Jacques prematurely passed away, and the Adam family took over the estate and vineyards a bit over 20 years. Laure Adam, the 15th generation of this family’s winery. Under her direction, the vineyards were converted to biodynamic viticulture. The wines from the historic Kuentz-Bas vineyards located in Husseren-les-Châteaux above Eguisheim are vinified separately to retain the original unique character abd style.
